I know I am always looking for new books to read for the kids and myself, so I thought I would share with you what my family's favorites are at the moment. I would love if you would all share yours, as well. Always looking for more to read!
What We are Reading to the Kids:
On the Night Your Were Born For some reason, The Cool Cucumber LOVES this book. Every time I start reading it, his whole face lights up and he starts cooing. It is really weird. I never liked it much with The Quiet Contemplator, but love reading it to The Cucumber.
The Tickle Monster The Quiet Contemplator loves this book right now.
Where the Sidewalk Ends
Falling Up
A Light In The Attic
We love reading these books. I grew up with Shel Silverstein and, thankfully, my kids are too. One of my favorites is Hector the Collector, from Where the Sidewalk Ends. The Contemplator loves Complainin' Jack, from Falling Up.
The Pout Pout Fish Such a cute story and well written. I think it is a great reminder that we can all be happy if we just allow ourselves to be. Sometimes we feel we just aren't "designed" to be happy.
What Mommy is Reading:
The Hunger Games This was my first real dip in the reading pool since I had the kids. Sad, I know. What it did was remind me of what an ridiculously addictive reader I am. I finished these books in about a week. It was gross. I couldn't stop. Not because they were awesome or anything, but just because I love to have something easy to read.
Fifty Shades Mmmmm...Mommy porn. Me likey. So easy to see that this is Twilight fan fiction in the beginning, but it goes away about halfway through the first book. Besides, at least Christian gives it up, unlike that prude Edward.
(Yes, I sometimes read more intelligent stuff than Twilight-esqe drivel, but Mama is tired and just wants to give her brain a break for the time being.)
You should try anything by Jen Lancaster. She is hilarious. "On the Night You Were Born" is so sweet. I teared up the first time I read it to my bean. He also really liked "I Love You Through And Through". It is a sweet book as well and the illustrations are so freaking adorable. Unfortunately, we have now graduated into the realm of Spider Man and trucks. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteThank, Sara. I will have to look Jen up. We also like I Love You Through and Through. So cute!
DeleteLove this! (We have the first book and I've never read it to TIH. I need to read it!)
ReplyDeleteI am ABSOLUTELY getting the tickle monster book.
One of our favorites is a series of board books called "That's Not My..." (we have ...Dinosaur and ...Monster) They're all textured and cool and they're short so they make for good bedtime reading.
I'm reading "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn (It's her third book, I read all of them this year. Highly recommended.) But, I'm with you on the light, easy, young adult reads. In addition to Hunger Games and Fifty Shades, I also read the LA Candy Series by Lauren Conrad. I'm not even sorry.
I will have to check out That's Not My. We love books!
DeleteYeah, I've read about 2 books since the boy was born. I even left off in the middle of one when I went into labor and can't seem to finish it to this day.
DeleteWe have "That's Not My Truck." I love that they're so repetitive kids can "read" them on their own.
And if you like YA, you need to talk to Moedawg over at Aspiring to the Middle; she's all about that stuff, too.
I wish I had more time to read!
DeleteI am reading "The Passage" by Justin Cronin, it is really good! Other recent books I have read and loved: "The Marriage Bargain" By Jennifer Probst, and "Beautiful Disaster" by Jamie McGuire.
ReplyDeleteWe need to all start a reading exchange. I know I am too cheap to buy books and only read what people lend me, but I have TONS of books.
ReplyDeleteDude. Go to the freaking library. SLCL has won awards because their selection is so good. And their ebook selection is incredible. I got my Kindle last December and since then I've read over 40 books and I checked 3/4s of them from the library.
DeleteI am so with you. I love books, but they get ridiculously expensive when you binge on them in the way that I do.
I tried but they told me they wouldn't let me rent anymore books until I paid my $.93 overdue fee. And they won't let me pay over the phone. I have to go in person. Assholes.
DeleteTotal assholes.
DeleteYou should send them a check. For .92 cents. Just to be an asshole back.
as the mommy of a little boy, i can't help recommending a book your kids will really enjoy: Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle. it is SOOO stinkin' cute! great pics, sing-song story, about trucks and farm animals - what kid wouldn't like it? i got our copy on half.com since my kid just chews on books, and it's like brand new for 2 bucks. :)

DeleteDon't forget 'Love You Forever by Robert Munsch' !!! I grew up with it, now my son is, it is still my favourite!! always will be!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd for me : Anything by James Patterson!! He writes an amazing detective series about a DC detective named Alex Cross, and he is coming out with a movie and Tyler Perry is playing Alex Cross!!! Yes plleeasse!
I like the cross series.
DeleteAs or I'll love you forever, it kind Of creeps me out when she drives across town, climbs in his window, climbs into his bedroom and then rocks him in his adult bed. Shivers. Ha ha.
Robert Munsch, has a lot of other great books. you can also buy CDs? (we have tapes) of him reading live several stories per album. The kids were I work will sit and listen to the whole album (no books), 30 plus minutes starting at 3. two year olds will listen to a story at a time.
ReplyDeleteMy little one loves anything buy Sandra Boynton, especially Moo, Baa, La La La
Last Book I read though was Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. I'm going to check out some of the suggestions on here....
We loved moo baa lalala too until the Contemplator ate it...literally.
DeleteFrankenstein sounds awesome!
ReplyDelete"I Love You Stinky Face" is one of our faves around here, along with just about ANYTHING by Sandra Boynton.
ReplyDeleteAs for "Love You Forever"....I can't get through it wihout crying!! My uncle read it at my Grandma's funeral (22 YEARS ago!)::wipes away tears::
Beautiful
DeleteBookmarking this one! Our fave at the moment is I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. When he figures out where his hat is? Oh man, that shit gets me every time. I mean her...gets her every time.
ReplyDeleteHa! I cry every time I read Stellaluna.
DeleteMy son loves the Sheep with a Jeep book. Ours came with a CD so he can "read" it by himself if he wants to.
